When I walked into the room Just a little but faded I turned off all the lights And I sat down and waited People came and asked me questions While I sank inside my head Old men livin' off their pensions They'll be livin' till they're dead I like to hear a lady's laughter It's like the smile on the spring I know the way some sunshine kisses Make a soul begin to sing I know the stretches of the highway I seen some magic in the grass I know I got to do it my way If I want this shit to last Hey hey It's alright Ma It's OK I'll only take a couple minutes If you really want to wait I can show you how I do it You can leave it up to fate But the last reincarnation Of the only man you know Leaves behind his obligations I see now it's time to go

Love Is Old 03:02
Love is old and so am I Behind the dark veil of this nighttime sky It seems nothing has fallen or risen or died So I long for the place where in dreaming I lie A stack of old letters hangs down by my side Old signs of the trials that this love has supplied I can no more than hope that I truly have tried And that my eyes won't deceive me when my love is denied From pages I read in these mythical books Come stories and fortunes of lovers and crooks Yet they can't reassure me that I haven't mistook A bold implication for a questioning look Maybe again these thoughts are too much Too old to discard the idea of a crutch Too earnest and eager to easily clutch The simple perfection contained in a touch Love is simple, as these things will be It is I who confuses, it's I who can't see As I muddy the waters to find clarity It seems nothing can stand in my way now but me And maybe I'll never decide what is true Maybe I'll never know just what to do But if I lose all these questions I'll lose other things too If I can't have the answers, I hope at lease I have you I find, sometimes, it's hard to define The thoughts that take up time in my mind And words I'd like to say

With Wings 03:32
Movin' down the road Pullin' mule's on overload Up is a downer, down is a high When you're a loner, you can get by Stranded on a desperate limb Landed face-first on your chin On the road home there's some potholes So you drive slow on the flat stones Gravel, underneath the wheels Babel, just past yonder hills See from outside the people inside Goin' wild, wild, gettin' high, high Power is a tricky kind Towers rise inside the mind Less is more, it's never enough Once you get going, the going gets tough

Freaky Blues 04:38
Look at all the freaky people They been here before When you laughed about your better half And cried about the war Now look at how they cross your path And tear the rules apart In broad daylight they dance and sing And then they hide to cross their hearts Remember when you weren't so old You were neither quite so young Like tumbleweed and dust you rolled Tryin' to find a brighter sun But now the days have picked up speed And now you're out of breath And now the words that gave you life Sound far too much like death If you find out how you feel today And still got words to speak Come on by to my place We'll repaint my old antiques And if I get distracted Or if my jaw is locked Put on a pot of tea my friend And we'll turn off all the clocks I been around a couple places now Tryin' to find somewhere to breathe Every time I put down my feet Somebody says it's time to leave My mind has been so busy My heart's been gathering dust But I know that where the river flows There's always time for love and trust I know that it's a long road And I know I'm on my own But I also know I'd be a fool To walk it all alone So put your mind at ease now Put it off as best you can And we'll drink a glass to better times And clap these dirty hands

Wretched 04:11
I'm so hungry Baby won't you give me some bread Lay me down love Cool me in the calm of your bed I'm so tired Lately baby I can't sleep Just keep goin' Wonderin' when I'll crumble and weep Oh have I grown so wretched Oh how'd I get so poor Have I ever wanted like I do To hear someone at my door Where are my friends and neighbors Where is my sweet sweet girl Where is the one I came to find From halfway 'round the world I'm so lonely Don't you know I been here before You don't know me Don't you wanna know me some more You're so pretty I can't believe the way that you smile Oh sweet lady Won't you stick around for a while

Well I ran into a mishap I can't remember when I was stuck inside the hunger From September till the end Even the road was a stranger The wheels all forgot how to roll I was not even close to the station I was sleepin' inside of a hole But when everything is outlawed I'll still know where to go I was lyin' around in a backwards town Findin' shadows inside the walls I was talkin' out loud to a desperate crowd Filled with photographs and dolls I tossed all my cards to the thunder I broke all the strings with my ax I left a few people to wonder Sayin' I'd be comin' right back But when everything is outlawed I'll still know where to go I had barely enough not to call my own bluff And I hardly even managed that So once again I put down my pen I left without my hat The last thing someone told me Right before I stumbled out He said, "Who ain't free if they try to be?" His voice was filled with doubt But when everything is outlawed I'll still know where to go As before I shot out the door All loaded up with bags The mess behind was out of my mind All leftovers and rags You see I ran into a mishap But I can't remember when I was stuck inside the hunger From September till the end And everything is outlawed And I still know where to go

Could you put me on a platform Send me someplace warm Hang me by the window And keep me safe from harm 'Cause I got no destination I got no strength to move I can feel my life a-changin' But it's nothing I can prove And I'll show you what I can But I'm only what I am today Could you lend a little shelter Hold my head against your breast Let me sleep till March or April Till I stand against the rest I won't put you on no platform I won't throw you down I'll just love you best I can babe Till my ashes dust this town And I'll show you what I can But I'm only what I am today
9.
You turn and go back now When there's nobody home You stepped on the cracks And now you take to the throne You sit down, you skin up Put some clothes on and rise With the steam from the coffee cup And the smoke in your eyes What worked before don't work no more Ain't nothin' to be done I sank a stone back east Skipped a second to the west Slipped away to find some peace Now I'm just lookin' for some rest Even if the roots go deeper I got my branches in the sky I can't be nobody's keeper I need my room to multiply I been chasin' down the mountains I been jumpin' high as hell I scraped the faces off the fountains Dropped the bodies down the well At least the sky is wide And the horizon ain't too near There's no place here to hide But there ain't nothin' left to fear What worked before don't work no more Ain't nothin' to be done You step back for a minute That's all you've got to do You don't need to be there in it Just to know that it's there in you And the smoke around your head It feels like dust behind the plow As you stand up to go to bed You know that's good enough for now

Dirty Dishes 03:34
Dirty dishes in the sink Cheap red wine, a late night drink A little while, I just get bored Lookin' around to find the right word Cigarettes, shaky hands A wanderin' mind, a weary man Same old clothes you used to wear Same old face, just a colder stare People cry, people scream Because a dream is just a dream Love in vain, love and theft When love is gone, there ain't nothin' left Give a smile, make it cute Make it real, or else we'll shoot And if you got some words to say Say 'em now, today's the day

Who convicted you? What'd they say you do? Hey man listen clear We gotta git outta here I'm not guilty too But my free days are through Aw man I'm feelin' weird We gotta git outta here It's all up in the news But I keep hittin' snooze They're tellin' me what to fear We gotta git outta here I'm gettin' outta bed My eyes are dry and red They're lurkin' in the mirror We gotta git outta here They're takin' all that's pure Corruptin' it with the cure You can smell 'em gettin' near We gotta git outta here It's such an awful mess It's too much to digest One more whisky and a beer And we gotta git outta here We ain't got that much time We can't just change our minds I'm not bringin' up the rear We gotta git outta here You don't need to cross the sea To be able to see Things are not what they appear We gotta git outta here

Fine Line 03:19
Well there's a man on the corner, he's lookin' at me He's lookin' real mean and he's taller than a tree I just say, "Listen mister I been tryin' to be free" And he says, "Me too, that's why I joined the army" And it's a fine line I been walkin' on Hangin' 'round in this old town There's a woman in the kitchen she's standin' on her head She says she loves me but she thinks my name is Ted And when I try to argue she says she'll knock me dead But I think I'll just leave this kitchen instead I seen 100-million people all wearin' the same pants They're marchin' around like a bunch of little ants Me, I'm gettin' out, I'm goin' off to France And I can tell you when I get there I'm gonna do a little dance All these politicians, they ain't got no nerves They got a way of sayin' nothin' with a whole lot of words I don't know what you mighta thought ya heard But they treat other people like a bunch of little turds I been thinkin' real hard, I been thinkin' too much Me and my head are like a cripple and a crutch And I haven't yet decided if it would be such A good idea for me to go out and try to get touched And it's a fine line I been walkin' on And now I'm gettin' outta this old town
